About The Ace Builder

The Ace Builder is a construction contractor based in San Diego, California, serving all of San Diego and Orange Counties. We specialize in designing and building beautiful new decks for our clients. Whether you want a ground-level deck off the back of your home or a multi-level deck made with Western Red Cedar, we can build it for you. We help you navigate the sometimes confusing process of getting your plans approved and permits issued for construction.

Decking Materials We Use

Pressure Treated Pine Decking: This is one of the most popular decking options due to its affordability. Even with more luxurious decking materials, the frame of the deck is often built using pressure-treated pine, especially if it contacts the ground. Pressure-treated lumber is resistant to rot and insects, withstands moisture well, and is readily available, making it one of the most affordable materials. It doesn’t need to be painted if you like the dark brown or green color variations.

Redwood & Cedar Decking: If budget isn’t an issue and you want a more elegant look, redwood or red cedar are excellent choices. These Western softwoods are highly sought after for their deep rich colors and natural beauty. They contain tannins and oils that help them resist rot, decay, and wood-boring insects without chemical treatments.

Ipe Decking: Also known as Brazilian Walnut or Ironwood, Ipe (pronounced “Ee-pay”) is a beautiful exotic wood from South America. It is naturally resistant to rot, abrasion, and weather, making it ideal for decks in various climates. Ipe is more expensive than Cedar but offers outstanding looks and performance.

Composite Decking: If you want a low-maintenance deck, composite materials might be the right choice. Composite decking comes in various styles and colors, closely mimicking real wood. Although more expensive than traditional wood, composite decks require less maintenance, needing only a good power wash once or twice a year to keep looking like new.

Considerations for Building Decks

1. What amenities do you want? Decks can be simple or complex with various useful features. Popular add-ons include built-in seating, planters, electrical outlets, and covered areas or pergolas. The more complex the deck, the higher the cost.

2. Do you need railings? If your deck is ground level and less than 2 feet in height, railings are usually not required by code. Elevated or multi-level decks with stairs will need railings, which can be custom-made from wood or durable aluminum.

3. Will you add a hot tub? Adding a hot tub requires an appropriate pad to support its weight when filled with water. Elevated or second-story decks need additional structural support, plumbing, and electrical upgrades.

4. Do you want a BBQ area? Consider creating a small “bump out” for the BBQ to avoid taking up deck space. You might want a natural gas line piped into the deck and a small pergola for weather protection.

5. What about deck lighting? Deck lighting is essential for evening use and safety, especially for decks with stairs. We can install various low-voltage or LED lighting systems to meet your needs.
